GPS receivers can automatically record where you have been as a digital dot-to-dot line. Allowing the possibility for drawings to be created by treating travel as a geodetic pencil or a cartographic crayon.

Satellite signals are used to calculate its position on earth using trilateration. With four or more satellites in view it can used to determine a 3D position using latitude, longitude and altitude.
